Une première expérimentation au Kenya
À Kiunga, au Kenya, une sécheresse persistante a débuté en 2014. Les habitants ont été contraints de boire de l’eau salée, s’exposant notamment à une insuffisance rénale, et à laver leurs vêtements à l’eau salée, processus très irritant conduisant à l’apparition de lésions et de blessures cutanées.
C’est là que ce système de dessalement est expérimenté depuis juillet 2018. Il produit 75 000 litres d’eau potable par jour : de quoi combler les besoins journaliers de 25 000 personnes.

L’association espère aussi dynamiser la vie sociale et économique de la région.
L’approvisionnement en eau est un souci quotidien pour une grande partie de la population mondiale. Selon la Commission des droits de l’homme des Nations Unies, les femmes et les enfants d’Afrique et d’Asie parcourent en moyenne 6 km par jour pour aller chercher de l’eau. Cela représente beaucoup d’énergie et de temps, et peut notamment empêcher des enfants de suivre une scolarité. À Kiunga, un groupe de femmes a monté une entreprise de lavage de vêtements à l’eau douce. GivePower espère qu’un vaste réseau de distribution se mettra en place sur place, créant une activité économique positive dans la région.
À l’avenir, l’association envisage de créer des unités de dessalement solaire plus petites et modulables, qui utiliseraient une seule pompe et seulement trois batteries Tesla.
Elle travaille sur des projets à l’île de la Gonâve et à Mombasa, au Kenya, qui devraient être opérationnels à la fin de l’année.
